ADMIN UPDATE
Hi all, can you believe weβve nearly been on Facebook for 3 months now!
We are learning lots and gathering information from those who have gone before and working within the multitude of food acts etc that we have in Australia.
Due to a complaint and subsequent instruction from Safe Food Production Qld, we must currently CEASE sharing eggs publicly at the Exchange immediately. Thank you to those whoβve generously shared in the past
Firstly NO-ONE PANIC – this sounds worse written than it actually is
The cliff notes are – use common sense and donβt bring high risk foods.
This is the long version:
AS OF NOW, THE BELOW ITEMS MUST NOT BE LEFT:
Eggs or egg products (unless cooked in something that is shelf stable)
Meat or meat products
Seafood or seafood products
Dairy or dairy products (unless cooked in something that is shelf stable)
Raw honey (Iβm going to clarify)
Cut/halved fresh fruit and veg (leave them whole and intact)
Raw squeezed juice thatβs unpasteurised
Cooked foods containing rice
Cooked foods containing pasta
Cooked foods containing beans (Iβm going to clarify)
Cooked foods containing tofu (Iβm going to clarify)
These are really just the high risk foods which are almost never left – not much will actually change other than the eggs.
There will be an updated FAQ coming in the future which will clearly outline what can and canβt be left at the exchange. We want to see this become a long-lived & loved part of our community and so weβre aiming to make this as safe as possible! Updates will be coming on baked goods, preserves and temperature sensitive foods.
SO WHAT SHOULD WE LEAVE!?
You may be thinking The focus of our Edible Exchange has always been fresh, homegrown produce . Truly there is nothing better! Letβs get those edible plants going, sow seeds & take cuttings! Weβll focus on growing food, education & skill sharing. Letβs keep the food exchange simple & safe! We are also lucky to have our epic library and compost hub
We know many of you love creating special items for the EHEE, so we encourage you to leave sealed preserves & baked, shelf stable items that are labeled and individually wrapped & sealed, rather than the high risk foods listed above.
Thank you for your kindness as we work all this out on the run. We appreciate you all so much and I know this group will just go from strength to strength
Katie & Tom
